Lawmakers warn FIRS for disrespecting Congress

The House Committee on Public Accounts (PAC) has issued a warning to the Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, Zak Adedeji to refuse to accept its invitation.

The committee said Mr. Adeji's actions amounted to contempt of parliament.

He said this at the resumption of inquiry hearing into revenue leakage in Abuja on Thursday.

While reading the sedition law against the FIRS chairman, Salam said this is the fourth time the committee has invited the FIRS chairman, but he did not attend.

According to him, in addition to formally writing to him, the committee also ensured that such letters were delivered personally to his mailbox and WhatsApp number.

“And we are calling this irresponsible and arrogant, explaining it to him and telling him there will be consequences if he continues this disrespect for Congress,” he added.

He said several letters were written to him but he received no response, adding that the value added tax that the federal government was supposed to collect on Remita was not collected by FIRS.

He added that part of the value added tax from the revenue collected by Remitta should have been paid to FIRS, but he would rather aggregate the value added tax and share it with the CBN, banks and Remitta.

“By the time we finish the settlement, that money will be in the hundreds of billions of dollars. This is what we were asking FIRS to come and collect, but FIRS has refused to show up,” he added. ” he added.
