Europa Conference League: Why Emi Martinez wasn't sent off for a second yellow

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez was not sent off despite receiving a second yellow card during Thursday night's Europa Conference League quarter-final second leg against Lille, sparking confusion.

Martínez was booked for time-wasting in regular time and was booked again in the penalty shootout as the score was tied 3-3 on aggregate after 120 minutes.

However, the Argentine stopper stayed on and made two saves as Villa progressed to the semi-finals.

Soccer transfer expert Fabrizio Romano explained the rules that allowed Martinez to continue playing.

He tweeted: “Dive Martinez has done it again. Saved two penalties, silenced the French crowd (!) and helped Aston Villa reach the semi-finals.

“Martinez was also booked in the first half and then received a second yellow card in the penalty shootout…

“…However, he was not sent off because “a player who receives a yellow card during a penalty in a match is not sent off.'' ”
