Super Eagles team will receive US$7 million if they win the tournament

Nigeria's Super Eagles team will receive US$7 million (N8.9 billion) if they win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Nigeria qualified for the final of the 34th edition of AFCON after defeating South Africa at the Stade de la Paix, Bouke on penalties after 120 minutes of football ended 1-1.

To qualify for the final tournament, the Eagles have already guaranteed US$4 million.

Earlier, Dr Patrice Motsepe, president of the Confederation of African Football, announced a 40 percent increase in prize money before the start of the tournament.

According to the statement published on the football governing body's website on January 4, the winners of the tournament will receive US$7 million, US$2 million more than the reward distributed in the last edition in Cameroon.

The runners-up in the African showpiece event will now receive US$4 million (N5 billion), while each of the losing semi-finalists, South Africa and DR Congo, will receive US$2.5 million, with each of the four finalists taking to house 1.3 million dollars.

“CAF has made significant progress over the last two years in increasing prize money at AFCON and all its other major competitions,” Motsepe said.

“We have increased the AFCON winner's prize money to $7,000,000, which is a 40% increase over the previous AFCON prize money.

“I am confident that a part of the prize money will contribute to the development of football and will also benefit all football stakeholders as well as assist our member associations in their administrations,” he added.
