Otsu City launches rice cultivation plan on 50,000 hectares

Governor Bassey Otu over the weekend inaugurated a 50,000 hectare rice farming project in Ogoja.

Mr Otu, who signaled the end of the scheme at Ndoku community in Ogoja Local Council, said the scheme would be supported by a credit facility that would enable the state to allocate N150 million monthly to agriculture.

Otsu hinted at working directly with rice farmers to cultivate the vast 50,000 hectares of land.

The governor emphasized his commitment to partnering with rice farmers, saying: “We are working with farmer groups as part of the agricultural revolution, initially focusing on short-term cash crops such as rice, cocoa and cassava.

“We are also progressing in developing oil palm and rubber plantations.”

Recognizing the importance of food and energy security, Otu assured farmers of the state government's full support, saying:

Mr Otu revealed that the Credit Guarantee Scheme was established to facilitate financial assistance to dedicated farmers while stressing that the scheme is independent from government.

He called on individuals to take action rather than stand idly by. He pointed out that the nation is endowed with abundant resources by God's providence.
