Ondo: 19 political parties featured in Gubar poll – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 19 political parties will participate in the November 16 Ondo State gubernatorial election.

The Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Oluwatoyin Babalola, said political parties had informed the commission of their readiness to participate in the polls.

Speaking at a meeting with representatives of political parties in Akure, Babalola added that political parties had informed the commission about the conduct of primaries for the governorship election.

She said political parties include the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Accord Party, Action Alliance, African Action Congress, African Democratic Congress, ADC, African Democratic Party, ADP, and All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA. Others include the Allied People's Movement, APM, Action People's Party, Boot Party, Labor Party, LP, New Nigeria People's Party, NNPP, National Rescue Movement, People's Redemption Party, PRP, Social Democratic Party, SDP, Youth Party, Youth Progressive Party, YPP and Zenith Labor Party, ZLP.

Babalola noted that the meeting was an opportunity to work with political parties for the upcoming party primaries, noting that the role of political parties in ensuring the success and integrity of the process cannot be overemphasized. No, he added.

She ordered all political parties to strictly adhere to the guidelines, rules and provisions of the constitution in conducting the primary elections next month.

The Commissioner recommended that political parties entrench principles of internal democracy in conducting primaries in order to reduce tensions, divisions and pre-election incidents that may arise after conducting primaries.

Mr. Babalola called for assurances that the primaries would be conducted in a peaceful, orderly and transparent manner to ensure the credibility of the results.
