Nigerian military to welcome Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in May

Defense Headquarters (DHQ) announced that its soldiers are ready to welcome Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle.

Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, is revered among the world's militaries for launching the Invictus Games, a sporting event for military personnel injured in combat, in 2014.

The games were first held in London in 2014. “Invictus” means “unconquered” in Latin and was chosen to embody the fighting spirit of wounded, injured, and sick service members and what they can accomplish after being wounded.

The sport has helped promote recovery, support rehabilitation, and create broader understanding and respect for those who serve our country in the military.

DHQ said it was honored and pleased to host the Duchess, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle, who will visit Nigeria in May 2024.

According to Defense Spokesman Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, “During their stay in the country, they will meet military personnel and host various cultural activities.

“You may recall that Prince Harry, the Duchess, founded the Invictus Games, an international multi-sporting event that provides a path to recovery for injured, wounded and sick service members internationally.

“It will also provide awareness and social recognition to support soldiers on their rehabilitation journey.The Invictus Games had around 500 participants in the last edition, with the team winning gold and silver medals in the inaugural edition last year. Twenty-one countries participated, including Nigeria.

“This visit is to cement Nigeria's strong position in the games and the possibility of hosting them in later years.

“The Honorable Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar Badal, who was in Germany for last year’s games, agreed to host the event if Nigeria is given permission to host it.”
