KFC apologizes to former governor's son over discriminatory treatment

KFC Nigeria has issued a statement regarding a recent incident at its outlet at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, where a customer in a wheelchair alleges discriminatory treatment.

KFC apologized to Daniel and said the incident did not reflect its standards.

“We have undertaken efforts to address the situation and deeply apologize and deeply regret the frustration and distress experienced by our guests,” KFC said in a statement.

“We are dedicated to our team members and facilities to ensure all guests feel truly welcome and to provide empathetic customer service that proactively addresses each guest's diverse needs. We are actively looking for solutions to better equip ourselves.”

The customer, Deborah Daniel, the son of former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel, took to social media yesterday to condemn the “vile discrimination” he suffered at the KFC store.

Daniel, who uses a wheelchair, described the incident as “the worst kind of public humiliation” he had ever experienced.

He said the incident occurred after security on a Virgin Atlantic flight to London.

He said he had frequented restaurants at the airport, including KFC, on previous trips because the elevator was out of order, and security recognized him as a frequent customer and greeted him by name. He added that he gave it to me.

However, when the manager entered the KFC with his companion, consisting of his brother and his wife, he allegedly declared that “wheelchairs are not allowed'' and asked them to leave.

“Samuel, the security guard at KFC, greeted me by name on my many visits. When we were about to sit down, the woman at the register (apparently the manager) said, “No wheelchairs allowed.'' ” I shouted loudly.

Daniel added that his wife recorded the incident with video and photos.

He said his wife attempted to make further inquiries under the guise of an order, and the branch manager reiterated the branch's “no wheelchairs” policy.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on Thursday closed the KFC outlet after conducting an investigation into the incident.
