Governor Lawal meets with Tinubu over security insecurity in Zamfara

Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal met with President Tinubu to discuss the alarming increase in banditry and related criminal activities in the state.

The meeting was held behind closed doors on Tuesday inside the Office of the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

A statement by Zamfara Governor's Spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, said the governor briefed President Tinubu on the security situation in Zamfara, particularly the resurgence of attacks in some areas.

The two leaders discussed various strategies and measures to address the deteriorating security situation, including enhanced security deployment, intelligence gathering and community engagement programmes, the statement said.

The meeting also stressed the need to address the root causes of the problem, such as poverty and unemployment, which are contributing to the rise in crime in the state.

“Today, Governor Dauda Lawal met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa and discussed important issues regarding the security situation in Zamfara State.

“During a closed-door meeting, Governor Lawal informed the President that over the past 13 years, Zamfara State has emerged as a hub of banditry in northwestern Nigeria.

“Due to the lack of sufficient manpower, arms and logistics in Zamfara, the governor appealed to President Tinubu to intervene to provide the military with sufficient manpower, arms and logistics. Also, support the ground forces. He also requested sufficient air support to carry out the attack.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured the governor of his commitment to provide all critical support and logistics to the security forces to ensure the restoration of peace in Zamfara State.

“Furthermore, the President reaffirmed the administration's position against negotiating with bandits and paying ransoms to kidnappers, actions that only empower them,” the statement read.
