Edu greets Tinubu amid investigation into financial fraud allegations



Suspended Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Minister Beta Edu, who is suspended amid allegations of financial misconduct and abuse of power, on Friday celebrated President Bola Tinubu's 72nd birthday.

Ms. Edu extended birthday wishes to Mr. Tinubu of X, praising the President for his visionary leadership and his positive impact on the nation.

The action came after Mr. Tinubu suspended Mr. Edu from his ministerial duties and directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate allegations of financial misconduct in the matter.

Since his suspension, Edu has kept a low profile on social media platforms.

The scandal, reported by the Guardian, involves the approval of a transfer of 585.2 million naira to a public servant's private bank account.

The alleged civil servant is an accountant in charge of grants to vulnerable Nigerians.

According to leaked documents, Mr. Edu requested the transfer of funds from the National Social Investment Authority account to the private bank account of Brigitte O'Niel, an accountant who oversees federal poverty intervention projects under Mr. Edu's ministry. It became clear that

The Minister stated that the payment instructions were not correct, even though the Federation's Treasurer said that the Minister's request was not complied with because “significant amounts of funds are not transferred to personal accounts in the name of project accountants”. He said he had followed procedures.

Edu State also approved the payment of airfare for its staff to Kogi, even though the north-central state does not have an airport.
