Doctors are not the object of venting systemic frustrations

A Nigerian doctor at the University College Hospital UCH in Ibadan, Nelson Udeme, has reacted after a man who assaulted him following the death of his mother apologized to him in a national daily.

Olanrewaju Tajudeen had lost his mother who was in the High Dependency Unit and, reacting to the sad news, attacked one of the doctors. He was arrested and forced to make a public apology.

In his letter of apology addressed to the Chief Medical Director of UCH, Olanrewaju promised that his outburst would never happen again.

“I, Mr. Oludaisi Olanrewaju Tajudeen, apologize to the Chief Medical Director, the hospital management, the Association of Resident Doctors, Dr. Nelson Udeme of University College Hospital, for my emotional outburst with the doctor on duty in the high dependency unit from UCH after the death of my mother, Mrs. Oludaisi Busurat.

I also withdraw any verbal threats to him and any other healthcare professional. I pray for UCH’s understanding and mercy.

I promise this won’t happen again.”

While accepting the apology, Udeme highlighted that doctors should not be objects to vent systemic frustrations. He also mentioned that he also lost his mother due to a broken healthcare system.
