Constitutional review must respond to the aspirations of Nigerians – Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Kalu
House of Representatives Vice-Speaker Benjamin Cull called for synergy between consultants and secretariats of the Senate and House Constitutional Review Committees to set the pace for effective partnerships to make the ongoing exercise a success. .
Cull, who chairs the House Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, made the call at a joint training session between the secretariat and consultants of the House and Senate Constitutional Review Committees over the weekend.
He told stakeholders that effective synergy would bring the challenge to fruition that meets and satisfies the aspirations and aspirations of Nigerians.
He aimed to provide stakeholders with ways and means to consider past amendments that were not passed by the National Assembly/State Legislatures or did not receive assent from the President and address those issues. and urged them to consider how these issues could be reintroduced. He said that constitutional reform is a continuous process and that all Nigerians should be empowered to enact a constitution that addresses controversial issues that have plagued the country since independence, such as state police and special seats for women. It reminded the Legislature that it needed to be given.
Noting that the 10th Congress builds on the legacy of previous Congresses that took a comprehensive approach and resulted in presidential assent to 18 constitutional amendment bills in the 9th Congress, Cal He praised the “national sacrifice” and patriotism of those involved.
He assured that members of both the Senate and House of Representatives committees would engage President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on various issues.
“As you all know, constitutional reform is a continuous process and must involve all Nigerians, regardless of their ideological leanings and beliefs. We are seeking a memorandum of understanding,” he added.
