Akpabio seeks NBA cooperation in reviewing rules


Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, to cooperate with the National Assembly in the ongoing constitutional review process.

Senator Akpabio made the call on Wednesday when he received leaders of the association on a courtesy visit to his office in Abuja.

The Senate President said he was satisfied with the visit, noting that the National Assembly could benefit greatly from the lawyers' input.

“We have solid plans to amend some of the laws we find locally, especially those that do not fit the current reality. Some of our laws are analogues and reflect today's demands It’s not fulfilling,” he said.

The Senate President also called on the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association to weed out quacks within the Bar Association to protect the integrity of the profession.

“There are a lot of law schools these days. You may not be able to see it the way you used to. As a lawyer, you have to learn both education and character.

“We also have to do a lot to root out quackery. We know it won’t be easy, but we have to do it. This is a continuous process. “We can understand and understand the quality of lawyers in Nigeria. But we as Parliament will continue to work with you.

Meanwhile, the NBA Chairman, Yakubu Maikyau (SAN), said the association was ready and willing to extend a hand to the Nigerian Senate for nation-building.

Mr Maikyaw said the association was proud of what the Senate had achieved under the leadership of Senator Akpabio, noting that the visit was to show solidarity with the Senate President.
