Youths demand urgent police response to Taraba killings

The Urukun Youths Association of Nigeria (WUYAN) has called on the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to urgently put in place mechanisms to tackle the spate of killings in Usmanu village, Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The group, at a global press conference in Haringo on Friday, expressed concern over the shocking acts of violence which have led to the indiscriminate destruction of human lives.

The association, led by national president Husseini Zuppai and secretary-general Issa Maiyaki, criticised the lack of arrests or charges despite multiple investigations by security forces.

They stressed the need for police to step up efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for murders in the area.

They lamented that the perpetrators were enjoying the violence and made an impassioned appeal to the police to “urgently explain to the public the murders that took place on November 15, 2023, January 11, 2024 and June 2, 2024.”

With the brutal murder of the traditional ruler of the village, Alhaji Auwal Abubakar, at his palace earlier this month still fresh in people’s memory, WUYAN expressed sadness that the perpetrators have not been brought to justice.

They maintained that bringing the perpetrators to justice was crucial to achieving peace in the community and the Assembly at large, urging the relevant security agencies to ensure appropriate action is taken by going after those causing trouble in the lives of villagers.

“The expertise of members of the Nigerian security operatives in investigating and prosecuting crimes should not be taken lightly as no one is above the law,” the WUYAN leaders said.

As well as calling for justice, the group called for the deployment of more security personnel to the area, urging the state Commissioner of Police, Mr David Iloyanomong, to conscript skilled and well-trained officers to restore peace and order in the village and maintain police dignity.

The association also commended Governor Agbu Kefasu for his efforts in ensuring peace in every nook and corner of the state, stressing the urgent need to secure more reinforcements to the villages.

They believe that if the proposal is given prompt consideration, it will go a long way in protecting lives and property of the local residents.
