World Igbo Congress opposes plan to establish ranch in Enugu
The World Igbo Congress, WIC and the Igbo American Veterans Association are opposing the plan to establish a ranch in Enugu State.
WIC called on the Enugu state government to pay attention to private cattle ranching, saying it is not in keeping with the Igbo ethos.
The group warned that establishing ranches in the state could have dire consequences.
They issued the warning in a statement titled “Concerns over the establishment of cattle ranches in Enugu State”.
A statement signed by WIC and AVID and addressed to Governor Peter Mba of Enugu State read: However, we came to know that there were plans to establish a cattle ranch in the state and we decided to have a joint communication.
“We would like to express our collective disapproval and lack of support for such initiatives within your jurisdiction. A similar program initiated by former Governor Orji Uzo Kalu of Abia State Given our experience of failing to deliver the expected economic benefits, we urge caution.
“Recent disturbing reports of over 80 casualties, believed to be Igbo, near the Lokpanta Cattle Market further underline our concerns. does not match the spirit of the land.

“It is noteworthy that no region in Nigeria has earmarked land for Igbo settlements or enterprises. The northern regions have vast tracts of land suitable for pastoralism.
“I urge you to prioritize key aspects of governance such as education, infrastructure, reliable power supply and poverty alleviation for the benefit of the people of Enugu State.”
