Worker who stole armored cable sentenced to 5 months in prison

The Lugbe First Class Regional Court in Abuja on Tuesday sentenced Ishaya Hassan, a 20-year-old laborer, to five months in a correctional center for stealing armored cables.

Judge Malam Aliyu Kagaruko sentenced Hassan after he pleaded guilty to theft and prayed to the court for mercy.

Mr. Kagaruko, however, gave Mr. Hassan the option of paying a fine of N30,000 and warned him not to commit any crimes in the future.

He said the punishment would have been even harsher had the convicts not been spared the rigors of lengthy prosecution in court.

Earlier, Public Prosecution Counsel Stanley Nwaforaku said a Sgt. Joshua Simon of the Defense Intelligence Agency, Asokoro, Abuja, arrested the convicts and the case was transferred to Asokoro Police Station on December 1.

He said the convict, who was a worker at a DIA construction site, fraudulently removed 28 meters of 12mm armored cable from a store on November 11, 2023.

He added that the convicts were later arrested and handed over to police for investigation.

The prosecutor said that during police interrogation and investigation, the convict confessed to the crime and the wires were recovered from him.

Mr Nwaforaku said the crime violated Section 287 of the Penal Code.
