A woman has revealed how she caught her mother-in-law making incest-like moves with her husband.
Emotional incest, also known as covert incest, is a form of abuse that involves parents treating their children as romantic partners.
Although it does not refer to sexual abuse, there are elements of blurred boundaries and harmful interpersonal dynamics that make it a particularly charged term.
On Reddit, the 30-year-old explained that her husband’s mother was never “weird” with him during their six-year relationship and “she doesn’t act like that” around her other two children.
She realized things changed when she announced she was pregnant in December last year and her mother-in-law began ‘showering’ her husband with gifts, talking about the couple’s bedroom life in relation to conception (including saying ‘Well, clearly you like of bowing people’) and calling his son darling, darling and daddy.
“It was never an excitement about her being a grandmother,” the woman said on Reddit, adding that her mother-in-law told people she was “nonchalant” about the pregnancy and showed up unannounced while she was in labor.
“She tried to get my husband to sit on the couch with her while I was having contractions because she “needed to make sure he was okay” and I watched her rub/squeeze his inner thighs several times,” the post read.
‘Every time she did this he would immediately pull away from her and you could tell it was bothering him, but he didn’t say anything.’
The woman felt she had no choice but to highlight what she saw as her mother-in-law’s emotionally incestuous behavior, leading to conflict within the family.
Recently, the mother-in-law once again arrived at the couple’s home uninvited and ‘immediately’ slapped her son’s butt upon entering ‘which is completely out of character for her’ and tried to laugh it off when he questioned it.
The woman’s post continued: ‘So he was sitting and holding the baby and she came up behind him and started hugging him from behind with her whole body pressed against him and said “She looks like us” (he and his mother they don’t look anything alike).
‘He just looked at her and then looked at me and without thinking, I said, ‘Hey, have you ever heard of emotional incest?’ If not, maybe look into it and correct your behavior because if this continues you won’t be able to come back here.”’
Faced with this, her husband gave her a stern look, but on the other hand he ‘remained mute’ until his mother left and refused to speak further about the matter, but the woman makes a point of reiterating that her mother-in-law makes her ‘uncomfortable’ and she doesn’t want her son around her if she keeps ‘acting strange’.
“Ultimately, she is being strangely sexual with my husband and if he doesn’t defend himself, I will,” she added, but questioned whether her accusation was wrong.
