Why Mr. Tinubu should review his REC appointments – Former INEC Chairman Jega

Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega, has called on President Bola Tinubu to review the appointment of the commission’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC).

Mr Jega said Mr Tinubu should review the appointments due to concerns that some parts of the REC were partisan.

About a month ago, Tinubu nominated 10 RECs and the Senate confirmed their appointments.

However, some RECs have been accused of engaging in partisan politics.

Reacting to the criticism, Mr Jega said the failure to review the appointment sends the wrong signal.

Mr Jega, featured on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, said: “If the President were listening, I have no doubt that my advice would be to immediately review the appointment of a Resident Election Commissioner that was recently passed by the Senate.

“This is very important because it clearly sends the wrong signals about the government’s intentions to improve electoral integrity, as well as showing a lack of interest when it comes to protecting electoral independence and fairness. This is because it suggests “the management body.

“I would like to believe that the president was either misinformed or was not fully informed of all the necessary details regarding these appointments.”
