'We can make mistakes' — Sanwo-Olu reacts to Lagos spending

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State said his administration was not immune to mistakes.

Mr Sanwo-Olu admitted there had been an error regarding the expenditure figures and said the government was committed to public goods.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the Lagos State Building Management Building (PWD) in Ikeja and reacted to the procurement records released by the Lagos State Public Procurement Agency.

Mr Sanwo-Olu said in the backdrop of an open letter by Lagos State Action Democratic Congress (ADC) gubernatorial candidate Funso Doherty, his administration would continue to disclose expenditure despite criticism.

The governor asserted that his administration is committed, accountable and transparent.

He said: “We don’t have a problem with anyone, any individual. We recognize that these are the ways we should do things.

“We welcome criticism. We appreciate the fact that people are looking us squarely in the face and saying we need to do better in this state. Hence the publication of the open letter. There is no problem with the government. In fact, we like it and want to thank him. So, certainly, to be a resolute and responsible government, it should not avoid criticism. .

“But problems arise only when the criticism is malicious and intended to misrepresent the truth. Some police officers in Lagos certainly make mistakes on some items. Some agree that it is a possibility. We have heard of specific cases where items were supposed to be N2m but were written as N2bn.

“In my case, I lead a team of very dedicated public servants. I lead a team of self-motivated public servants who want to help.”
