Vigilante member kills 21-year-old man after woman raised false alarm about robbery in Edo

A 21-year-old man, Kelvin Onyedikachi Ochioka, was killed by a vigilante in Edo State after a woman raised an alarm, claiming the deceased was a thief.

Ochioka, a telephone accessories hawker from Ebonyi State, was shot dead at 23 Erhunmwunsee Street, near Ehakpen Street, Uzebu Quarters, Benin City, at about 3:34 pm on December 25, 2023.

According to the Nigerian Tribune, the vigilante armed with a single-barreled gun, dressed in a mufti, heard the woman shout: “thief, oh! thief, oh!!”, climbed the fence to open fire on Kelvin.

The victim's friend, Mr Salas, said that Kelvin had a small fight with the alarmist woman popularly known as “Nurse”, over the musical sound of her MP3 player in the complex.

He added that a few hours after the verbal confrontation, the said woman started shouting 'thief oh! thief, oh 'when he saw her friend, and the guard shot him in the stomach.

Residents condemned the murder and called on the police to ensure justice was served.

They questioned the action of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Evbuotubu Police Station for allowing the woman to walk freely after the incident.

Spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the murder, saying the woman who raised the 'false alarm' was arrested and granted bail while investigation is ongoing.

The PPRO added that the vigilante killer and his weapon are now in police custody.
