Unical raises tuition fees by 100%

The management of the University of Calabar (Unical) has announced an increase in tuition fees for undergraduate students by more than 100 percent.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the announcement was made in a statement made available to journalists in Calabar on Monday.

In a statement from the agency,
Spokesperson Effiong Eyo said the upward review of fees was carried out during an emergency meeting of the university senate held on Friday.

The release revealed that the implementation of the upward review will come into effect in the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 academic sessions.

NAN reports that with the increase, freshmen, returning students and final year students in non-science courses are expected to pay N111,000, N91,500 and N114,000 respectively.

They will also pay N36,500, N21,500 and N21,500 respectively as dues to third parties.

Similarly, tuition fees for science courses have been increased to N155,000, N125,000 and N148,000 for new, returning and final year students respectively.

NAN reports that before the increase, the average student tuition fee was N64,050 for freshmen, N52,050 for final year students and N49,500 for returning students, depending on the faculty.

Management said the increase was necessitated by current economic conditions and the need to maintain the academic standards for which the university is known.
