Two women arrested for firing shots at alleged thief's funeral in 'celebration of his life'

Two women have been arrested in South Africa for firing firearms to celebrate the life of an alleged CIT thief at his funeral.

The Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation (HAWK), in a statement on Sunday, December 3, 2023, said the suspects, Bongo Yonela Dipa (24) and Chumisa Phunguzwa (35) appeared at the Tsolo Magistrates Court facing shooting charges illegal possession of a firearm, carrying a firearm without a license and attempted murder.

“The pair were arrested by the Hawks Serious Organized Crime Investigation Provincial Cash-in-Transit Task Team (CIT) during the early hours of November 30, 2023,” the statement read.

“On October 15, 2023, it is alleged that Dipa and Phunguzwa attended the funeral of an alleged suspect in the CIT robbery that occurred at the N2 Tsolo junction.

“The duo would be among those attending the funeral held at Mcetywa in Tsolo.

“The duo also allegedly fired shots illegally in a public space during the aforementioned funeral service celebrating the life of the deceased.

“Due to the alleged random shooting incident, one person was reportedly injured.

“A case has been opened and transferred to the Hawks CIT task team for intensive investigation.

“Investigation revealed that the duo were among the people identified during the alleged incident.

“Additionally, a comprehensive investigation resulted in the execution of an arrest warrant that was authorized upon the pair’s arrest on November 30, 2023.

“Phunguzwa and Dipa made a brief appearance in the Tsolo Magistrate’s court on Friday, 1 December 2023, where they were released on bail of R2,000 each.

“The matter has been postponed to February 5, 2024 for further investigation.”
