Two sons detained in Adamawa state for suspected murder of father

The Jimeta Magistrate’s Court in Yola on Wednesday ordered the detention of two brothers accused of murdering their father, 85-year-old Ibrahim Yusuf Kwada.

The defendants, Ibrahim Yusuf, 62, and Samaila Yusuf, 48, both of Za village, Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State, were charged with two counts of conspiracy and culpable homicide.

Chief Magistrate Bilikis Tijani denied the defendants' petition for want of jurisdiction and ordered them detained in a correctional facility.

The Chief Magistrate directed that the case file be reproduced and a copy be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions' office for legal advice.

He then adjourned the case until July 30 for mentioning or receiving the outcome of the DPP's advice.

“The case has been adjourned until July 30 to allow police to complete their investigations and send the case file to the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice,” the chief magistrate said.

Earlier, after the First Information Report was read out, the prosecuting counsel, Ezra Bulusu, told the court that the complainant, Amina Ibrahim, daughter of the victim and a resident of Za village in Michika local government, reported the incident at the police station on July 1 at 10am.

Bulus said Ibrahim reported that the defendants conspired to kill his father on June 9 and dumped his body in the bush.

The lawyers said the allegations were serious crimes that required legal advice from prosecutors and asked the court to postpone the matter until July 30.

He said the offences were in contravention of the provisions of Sections 160 and 191 of the Criminal Code of Adamawa, 2018.

When asked by the Chief Magistrate if the charges were true, the defendants, who had no lawyers in court, admitted to committing the crimes.

“We really did kill my father. We took him into the bush where we hit him over the head with a big stick and he died.

“We decided to kill him because he killed six of our family's grandchildren in a demonic way. He killed people in our community too.”

“Everyone is saying bad things about our family. Everyone is calling him a witch. We can't bear the shame and hurt he has brought us,” his brother said.
