Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested eight suspects in connection with the murder of a Deputy Superintendent of Police, (DSP) Sunday Okoebor, in Asaba, Delta State.

The police officer was shot dead during an attempted robbery in a residential neighborhood in Asaba on Tuesday, November 28, 2023.

The Chief of Staff of the 63 Brigade Headquarters in Asaba, Colonel Ibrahim Gambari, who paraded the suspects, said two of them were injured during the operation, while two others escaped armed.

According to him, the Army soldiers mobilized when they obtained information about the murder of the police officer in the Koka region, in the capital of São Paulo.

Gambari said his men joined the state police command ‘Operação Falcão’, who exchanged fire with the criminals.

“At around 3am on Tuesday, men from Operation Still Water II responded to a distress call regarding the robbery. We got there and found an exchange of gunfire. The robbers killed a police officer and our men engaged them in another gun duel,” he said.

“In the process, two of the suspects were shot and captured along with eight others, while two others managed to escape with gunshot wounds,”

“Following the incident, troops mobilized again to criminal centers in the area where another 125 people were arrested and of which eight of them were identified by residents as those who have been robbing them of their properties and terrorizing their areas,”

“We will hand them over to the police. We are just doing this ‘Operation Still Water’ to ensure a safe environment, especially in these hot months, to maintain peace,” Gambari added.

Items recovered include locally made pistols with live cartridges, laptops, jewelry, phones and other electronic devices stolen from residents of the neighborhood.
