Transfer: Why Arsenal fail to sign Arteta's top target – Ray Parler

Arsenal legend Ray Parler has hinted at why the Gunners were unable to sign Mikel Arteta's top transfer target Ivan Toney in January this year.

Toney has been heavily linked with Arsenal this winter transfer window.

The English player is yet to play this season after serving an eight-month ban for breaching Premier League gambling rules.

According to reports, Brentford have placed a £100m price tag on Toney, who has just over a year left on his contract.

“I don't think Arsenal would pay £100m so that's out of the question,” Parler told talkSPORT.

“Brentford can't afford to lose a key player. I know they haven't had him for a while, but look at the table. They have to worry. They're just ahead of Luton in the relegation zone. 4 points higher.”

He added: “He could be the guy who comes back and scores the goals that keep us in the Premier League. He's worth a lot more than taking a fee now because there's still great money available in the summer.” Ta.
