EPL: Arteta talks about leaving Raya out for Aston Villa vs Arsenal

Transfer: Arteta promises 'opportunity' to Arsenal star after interest from EPL clubs

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has promised Emile Smith Rowe to play for the team this season amid reports of interest from Chelsea and Newcastle United for the attacking midfielder.

Smith Rowe was the subject of a late search from Chelsea during the summer transfer window, but Arsenal rejected an approach from their Premier League rivals.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are favorites to sign the England star in the current January transfer window.

Smith Rowe has started just one Premier League game for the Gunners this season and has only made six appearances in England's top flight.

He mostly came on as a substitute or only appeared in the final stages of games.

However, Arteta added that he would not let the 23-year-old leave the Emirates unless the player himself wanted to leave, and that the opportunity would be there.

Asked about rumors that Smith Rowe was on the verge of leaving the north London club in the summer, Arteta said in his pre-match press conference ahead of Arsenal's FA Cup clash with Liverpool on Sunday: “It's not us.'' It was not part of the plan.”

Asked if he would stand in the way if a player wanted to leave, Arteta said: “It's always a two-way conversation with the players. I want to know how they feel, what's best for them and what's best for them. I love hearing about what they want to do, because you have to really align their feelings with them and make them feel important.

“This is still the biggest part of the season and we have to be patient, but he will have a chance.”
