Tinubu calls on religious leaders not to abuse Nigeria in sermons
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appealed to religious leaders to not vilify Nigeria in their sermons but instead pray for the country to witness growth and prosperity.
Tinubu made the call on Thursday during a Ramadan Iftar gathering with traditional rulers and religious leaders at State House, Abuja.
The President also emphasized the important role religious leaders play in shaping public opinion and fostering a sense of national unity.
He declared that his administration was determined to transform Nigeria's challenges into prosperity and urged leaders to be more constructive in criticizing those in elected positions.
Tinubu further reiterated that no terrorist, no matter how much they prey on innocent citizens, can defeat the collective will of Nigerians.
He appealed to traditional and religious leaders to forge strong ties with the federal government to combat terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of crime in the country.
“Yesterday (Wednesday), I was in Abuja to attend the burial of 17 soldiers killed in action in Okuma, Delta State. I saw their pregnant wives and small children,” Tinubu lamented.
“The love of the nation is in your hands. Pray for our country. Educate our children. The sermons we preach to members of our churches and mosques are important. .
“Don't blame your country. As Yoruba people and as our fathers say, 'No matter how slippery your child's butt is, the beads must remain there.' ”
“Leave your beads there. This is your country. Don't preach against it or abuse it. Leadership is about making a difference.
“Yes, this leader is bad, it's okay. Wait until the next election to change him. But don't blame your country. Don't curse Nigeria. This is a beautiful land.”
The president acknowledged the birthday wishes and goodwill showered on him at the Ramadan Iftar gathering, but reminded leaders that the president's birthday on March 29 coincides with Good Friday. .
“I am honored that my birthday falls on Good Friday, and I pray that you all return home safe and sound on this Holy Thursday. May God keep you safe and lift your spirits,'' the President prayed.
