Suspected phone thieves stabbed final year ATBU student to death in Bauchi
Unknown assailants suspected to be phone thieves have stabbed to death a final year student of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi (ATBU).
The 500-level geology student is said to be the eldest among four children in his family.
A school source told the punch that he was returning to his accommodation situated close to Yelwan Tudu market in the Yelwa area, a suburb of Bauchi metropolis, at about 7pm on Saturday, December 2, 2023, when he was attacked.
“Agabaidu, a final year geology student based in Otukpo LGA but an indigene of Ankpa LGA of Logo State, was fatally stabbed at about 7pm on Saturday as the attackers tried to forcibly take his phone,” the source said.
“Despite immediate efforts to get medical help, Agabaidu succumbed to his injuries and passed away yesterday (Sunday) morning.
“This tragic event echoes a similar incident last December when another Benue student lost his life in a phone-related fight.
“Following this heartbreaking loss, we implore the school management, police and Bauchi State government to prioritize and improve the safety of students in the state.
“Our community should not have to endure such sadness, and proactive measures are crucial to prevent further tragedies.
“Joseph is the older brother of three of his other brothers, all of whom study here at ATBU. The SUG vice-president, two other university officials and his brothers will transport his dead body back home.”
Meanwhile, it is learned that the students will hold a peaceful protest on Monday morning to express their grievances.
“The protest also aims to draw the attention of the school management, the state government, security agencies and everyone to the situation we find ourselves in as students,” the source added.
Another student said: “Students are preparing for a peaceful protest this morning. It is to express our pain over the unfortunate incident that happened to our fellow students. This is neither the first nor the second time this has happened.
“I am very hurt by this incident. I also have three younger brothers here at school. Imagine how I would feel if this happened to any of them. It turns out that with the organization I am a member of at school, I just have to maintain a neutral stance on this. I shouldn't be seen at the forefront of all the protest, but honestly, it's very painful
“I appeal to the administration, the state government and security agencies to respond to this incident and provide more adequate security to all students who have left their parental home and come to school to learn.”
