Nottingham Forest and Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been ruled out of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Ivory Coast after aggravating his groin injury in the Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw with Lesotho, in Uyo last week.

The Nigerian striker has since undergone surgery and will be out for months, according to Forest manager Steve Cooper.

Speaking ahead of Tricky Trees’ clash against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday, Cooper said: “It’s bad news for Taiwo, he’s had to have surgery and will be out for months.

“We will support him and try to get him back as quickly and fit as possible, but it is a really unfortunate situation and a blow for him.

“He has become an important player for us with the goals he has scored and the goals he will score for us, but he is such a good guy and such a good professional that he is desperate to do well, so to suffer an injury like this is difficult for him. he .

“We have to support him in the process of coming back stronger. He’s already done it once here and I’m sure he’ll give it his all again like he did last time.

“If you think about how well he did when he came back last season, I’m sure that gave him a good reference point to come back from.

“We’ll definitely see him again this season, but it’s groin surgery so it’s going to take a while.”

Awoniyi, who scored four goals in 11 Premier League appearances for Forest this season, will now spend a long period on the sidelines.
