Student arrested on suspicion of 750,000 naira accommodation fraud in Ondo

A 25-year-old student, Blessing Akingbade, appeared before the Okitipupa Chief Magistrate Court in Ondo State on Friday on charges of N750,000 accommodation fraud.

The defendant, of no fixed address, is charged with two counts of advance payment fraud and theft.

Police Prosecutor ASP Zedekiah Ologbemi informed the court that the defendant committed the crime on August 5, 2023 at 11am at Oke Iloro, Okitipupa, Okitipupa Local Government Area.

According to him, the defendant allegedly fraudulently received 750,000 Norwegian Naira from Mrs. Odunayo Akinbolade, also a student, on the pretext of helping Mrs. Odunayo Akinbolade secure an apartment in Okitipupa.

Prosecutors pointed out that the defendant knowingly made false statements and then used the money collected for his own purposes.

He said the crime committed by the defendant was an offense and could be punished under Articles 419 and 390(9) of the Penal Code. 37, Vol. 1, Ondo State Laws, 2006.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against her.

Chief Justice Cletus Ojuola granted the defendant bail of N200,000 and surety in the same amount.

He added that the guarantor must reside within the court's jurisdiction and must provide proof of paying taxes to the state government for two years.

The case was adjourned until January 18 for further hearing.
