South-East, South-South volleyball tournament concludes in Umuahia with Abia and Anambra crowned champions


The maiden South-East/South-South Volleyball Tournament concluded in Umuahia with Abia State bagging first place in the boys’ category while Imo and Anambra States bagged second and third place respectively in the men’s division.

In the girls category, Anambra State bagged first place while Bayelsa and Rivers States bagged second and third place.

Speaking at the event, Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, said his government would continue its efforts towards the development of all sports sectors in the state.

Otti, who spoke on behalf of the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr Nwaobiloru Ananaba, said many of the talented volleyball players who competed in the tournament were unearthed from the grassroots, adding that Abia was becoming a hub for the sport.

He congratulated the organisers of the tournament and expressed appreciation to officials of the Abia Sports Council for providing the right environment for hosting the tournament.

He also expressed appreciation for the playing field donated by the Vice President of the Nigeria Volleyball Association.

Vice President of the Nigeria Volleyball Association and Chairman of the Volleyball League Governing Committee, Nkechi Ezuugwe, commended the participants for their passion for the sport and encouraged them to continue chasing their dreams.

She thanked Governor Alex Otti for sponsoring the match and urged that the match be made an annual event.

Earlier in his speech, the Abia State Commissioner for Sports, Mr George Obioma, thanked the volleyball family for their efforts in developing volleyball in the South-East and South-South.
