South African man who stabbed his wife 20 times in broad daylight was sent to a psychiatric hospital for mental evaluation (graphic video)

A 32-year-old South African man who was filmed stabbing his wife 20 times has been sent to a psychiatric hospital.

Ntembeko Myalo was arrested on 11 November 2023, for the attempted murder of his wife, Sinoxolo, aged 26, a student at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila confirmed the development in a statement on Monday, 27 November.

“Accused attempted murderer Ntembeko, who allegedly stabbed his wife, who is a CPUT student, has been sent for mental assessment,” Ntabazalila said.

“A district surgeon examined Myalo this morning and recommended that he be sent for a 30-day psychiatric evaluation at the Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital.

It was learned that the accused, who is a student at the University of the Western Cape, allegedly accessed the South Point residence housing students (CPUT) with two knives.

He allegedly carved the mother of two as fearful students watched helplessly.

Another student recorded a video of the incident, where male students could be seen helping Sinoxolo.

A stranger managed to disarm Myalo and he was attacked before the police took him away.

The victim, Sinoxolo, works in the Peer Help program, where she provides psychological support to students.

She is currently recovering at an undisclosed hospital.

At his first appearance at Bellville Magistrates Court, it was heard that Myalo was facing a charge of rape committed before the stabbing.

Last week, through his lawyer, he told the court that he was unwell and a recommendation was made that he see a district surgeon.
