The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) says sexual harassment is a corrupt act punishable by seven years in prison.
The commission’s Secretary, Clifford Opara-Odu, gave the warning during a one-day awareness workshop on sexual harassment in tertiary institutions in Abuja.
He said victims must be aware of their rights and how to seek justice because the ICPC considers sexual harassment to be an act of corruption.
He expressed concern that sexual pleasure had become an “illicit currency” in many establishments.
“Sexual harassment is a form of corruption.
“It is a deviation from the norm for officers to use their office or position to request, receive, obtain, or attempt to obtain any form of sexual gratification in order to perform their duties.
“Ideally, public duties should be carried out honestly, conscientiously and diligently, without any expectation of illicit advantage,” he said.
