The Senate has called on the Federal Government to immortalize the late flag designer Taiwo Akinkunmi, who passed away in Ibadan on August 29.
During the plenary session on Tuesday, Oyo South Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun moved a motion urging the Senate to observe a minute’s silence in Akinkunmi’s honor.
The lawmakers also called on the federal government to honor Mr. Akinkunmi with a state burial in honor of his significant contribution to the nation’s identity.
The Senate then dissolved the Committee of the Whole to consider the Committee’s report on the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA).
The Senate then approved the appointment of engineer Chukwuemeka Agbasi as the executive director of FERMA and the appointment of nine others as members of the agency.
During the plenary session, Senate President Ahmad Lawan announced the appointment of Abba Moro of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the new minority leader.
Mr. Moro represents Benue South and replaces Plateau North Senator Simon Nwadokwon, who was removed by a court order on October 23.
However, the announcement of Senator Osita Ngwu (Enugu West/PDP) as the new Senate Minority Member to replace Labor’s Senator Darlington Nwokwocha caused an uproar in the Senate.
Senator Okechukwu Ezeah, representing Enugu North, objected to Mr Ngwu’s nomination, and his opposition was supported by Labor Party’s Senator Tony Nwoye, who questioned the PDP’s dominance in the minority leadership; was left without representation in the Senate leadership.
After a heated debate, Lawan ruled in favor of the majority voting in favor of PDP’s Senate Minority Whip candidate.
