Rivers police arrest notorious cult leader who stabbed man to death after victim withdrew his yearly savings from second-hand collector

Operatives of the Rivers State Police Command have arrested an alleged leader of a cult group, Iceland, Barikui Amanyie, for the murder of one Lioneda Lebari.

Barikui, 35, an indigene of Kaani community in Khana Local Government Area of ​​Rivers State, was on the Police watch list for allegedly terrorizing residents of Eleme Local Government Area of ​​the state.

Spokesperson of the command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, January 4, 2024, said the arrest of Barikui aka 'Lawyer' was a sequel to the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, to all tactical units of the command to intensify efforts to arrest all criminals on the command’s watch list.

“The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a notorious cult leader in Iceland terrorizing the Eleme area, 35-year-old Barikui Amanyie, also known as ‘lawyer’ in Eleme,” the statement read.

“The arrest was in response to a directive given by the Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, to tactical units and divisions to intensify efforts to apprehend all wanted criminals on the watch list of the Rivers State Police command.

“Barikui, a native of Kaanii in Khana Local Government Area of ​​Rivers State, has been on the Police watch list since December 31, 2021, when he and five other members of his gang murdered Mr. Lioneda Lebari.

“On the fateful day, the deceased was tracked down by the gang after withdrawing his annual savings of NGN150,000 from a local collector.

“He was tracked to the oil mill junction where he was attacked by Barikui and his gang and stabbed several times. He was left to die from his injuries as they fled the crime scene.

“The suspect, before being arrested, was hiding, changing hiding places regularly to avoid arrest.

“However, on Friday, December 20, the Rivers State Police Anti-Kidnapping Unit responded to a tip-off and arrested the suspect at his hideout in Eleme.

“Among the items recovered from the suspect were locally manufactured pistols and items suspected to be amulets.

“The suspect confessed to the crime and was charged with two counts of murder and cultism. Investigations are still ongoing as Police move closer to arresting other members of the murderous gang.

“The Commissioner of Police expressed his satisfaction with the promptness of the men of the Rivers State Police Command in dealing with the suspects on the Police watch list.

“He further accused them of not relenting in the campaign against crime, as the command began to gain ground in crime and crime in the state.”
