Residents abandon Taraba construction plan due to high cost of materials

The soaring prices of building materials in Taraba State has become a cause for concern among residents, especially would-be homeowners.

DAILY POST observed that many construction projects in the state have been postponed due to soaring material prices.

At the time of this report, construction activities have come to a halt in various parts of the state due to rising prices of building materials.

The price of a 6-inch block, which was previously sold at N8, has soared to 270 Naira, while the price of a 9-inch block has increased from 120 Naira to 380 Naira.

In addition to the increase in the price of cement, there was a corresponding increase in the price of sharp sand, which went from N5,000 to N15,000 per trip.

Many people who started housing projects are forced to abandon their plans due to exorbitant prices of building materials.

Alaba Omowale, who was forced to cancel his three-bedroom project, expressed his frustration and called on the authorities to intervene to help ordinary citizens who cannot afford the materials.

“Due to the current prices of cement, iron rods, blocks, etc., I gave up on the three-bedroom project I started last year,” Omowale lamented.

Sani Kabir echoed similar sentiments, questioning how one- and two-room apartments could be built with six-inch blocks and cement at current prices.

Building materials dealers told DAILY POST that the reason for the price hike was the dollar exchange rate and the rise in petroleum products.

While hoping for a natural fall in prices, he called on authorities to address fluctuations in the oil market and stabilize the dollar exchange rate.

“We are also not happy with this development as some of our customers have put construction projects on hold across the state,” said one dealer.
