Data from health facilities in Jigawa State shows that 75 per cent of disease burden and deaths can be addressed at the primary health care level, said Comrade Isa Mustafa, Executive Director of the Excellence in Leadership and Integrity Promotion Initiative (ELIP). said.
He said this during a day-long dialogue organized by the Jigawa Maternal Accountability Forum (JIMAF) with newly appointed special advisers and aides to Jigawa State Governor Malam Umaru Namadi on health matters. Stated.
According to him, “The Jigawa State government allocated a total budget of ₦163 billion to ₦30 billion for the health sector from 2015 to 2022, but only N112 billion was released.”
He said about N65 billion was spent on salaries and allowances and N46 billion was spent on capital projects.
He said that out of this amount, the primary healthcare sector received less attention, with the secondary and tertiary sector accounting for a large share.
“Seventy-five per cent of deaths could be avoided if more consideration was given to primary care,” he said.
Mustapha said in order to achieve the set targets, the Jigawa State government needs to redesign its health policy and expenditure to give more emphasis to the primary health sector.
He added: “We need to deliver a strong approach to the primary health sector to address challenges and make essential health services more accessible and affordable for all.”
The Special Assistant to the Governor on Health, Alhaji Isiaku Sabo, has pledged to do his best to improve the delivery of public health services.
