Protests broke out in Kano State on Wednesday, November 22, following the dismissal of Governor Abba Yusuf by an Appeal Court.
The Court of Appeal, sitting in Abuja on November 17, upheld the decision of the Kano State Election Petitions Tribunal that dismissed Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and declared Nasiru Ganuwa of the APC winner of the March 18 elections.
Protests erupted following reports of some discrepancies in the certified copy of the judgment, which appeared in the public domain and appeared contrary to the appeal court’s verdict.
Although the court’s widely publicized verdict last Friday indicated that the appeal court upheld the court’s ruling on Governor Abba Yusuf’s dismissal petition, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Isa-Dederi, argued that The CTC of the ruling showed that Yusuf’s victory at the polls was confirmed by the court of appeal.
Some of the protesters said they were ready to die as they demanded justice.
Men from the Kano state police command had to disperse the protesters with tear gas canisters. The protesters, however, said they would give everything, including their lives, to maintain the incumbent governor’s mandate.
