Prime Minister Buhari’s Minister Farooq did not avoid invitation, has health problems – lawyer responds to EFCC

The lawyer for former Humanitarian Affairs Minister Sadiya Umar Farouq, Oladipo Okpesei, has said that the minister did not refuse the invitation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The EFCC is investigating Farouk for allegedly defrauding him to the tune of N37 billion.

As part of the investigation, anti-corruption authorities have invited former ministers to explain themselves.

However, Okpesei told reporters that the minister could not accept the invitation due to health issues.

“I went to the commission headquarters on Tuesday to submit a letter to that effect, asking for an extension of time (change of date) to allow my client, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farooq, to make an offer at another time. She clarified the activities of some agencies under the ministry that she oversaw under the previous administration.

“Although the EFCC has not yet sent me a formal response, the leadership has advised us to take advantage of the EFCC’s understanding and, as a result, the commission has canceled the meeting originally scheduled for Wednesday (January 3, 2024). This resulted in the amicable agreement of the Parties to postpone the meeting to a time to be determined by the Parties.''The schedule will then be reviewed and amended. ”
