Poor road network fuels insecurity and stalls development in the Northeast – NEGF

Poor road networks have been identified as one of the factors contributing to insecurity and stalling development in the Northeast region.

The North East Governors Forum (NEGF) made this observation in an 11-point communiqué issued at the conclusion of its 9th meeting held in Yola, Adamawa State on Saturday.

The communiqué, signed by Forum Chairman and Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, and read out by Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, expressed regret over the poor infrastructure base in the region.

“What is even more concerning is that intra-state and inter-state federal roads in this region have been neglected. We are therefore calling on the Federal Ministry of Engineering to honor the road contracts signed in this region. ‘ they complained.

Another issue of concern raised by the forum was the issue of the region’s poor rail system.

“Similarly, it points out that rehabilitation of old gauge railway lines is not a useful and sustainable technique.

“The Forum calls for the inclusion of this region in Nigeria’s National Rail Transport Plan and National Highways Plan using modern gauge rail, which is severely lacking in this region.”

According to the communiqué, the forum resolved to hold its 10th session in Bauchi from February 23 to March 26, 2024.
