Police officer killed on New Year

Policeman killed on New Year's Day by thieves

A police officer was murdered on New Year's Day in Adamawa State.

Inspector Richard Felix, a mobile police officer attached to 43 PMF of the Lagos State Police Command, was attacked at Hotel Sangamu, Yola South Local Government Area of Adamawa, by some men at about 12.10pm on Monday, 1st January.

When Jambutu police arrived at the scene of the incident, they found the 46-year-old officer with serious chest injuries, Punch reports.

He was rushed to Yola Specialized Hospital, where he was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.

Inspector Félix's body was deposited in the morgue for an autopsy.

One person was arrested in connection with the incident. The arrested suspect, who also suffered injuries during the incident, was said to be in hospital for medical treatment.

Adamawa State Police Public Relations Officer Suleiman Nguroje confirmed the incident to Punch.

Nguroje said: “It’s true. We received the report; we rushed him (Inspector Félix) to the hospital. He was killed. One suspect was arrested. The Commissioner of Police ordered that the case be transferred to the State CID so that we know who the attackers were, who was behind it and what motivated it. Once this is done, we will ensure the law takes its course.

“We condemn the incident in its entirety. The life of a police officer is equally the life of a Nigerian. So, we cannot under any circumstances sit back and allow someone to take the life of a police officer, simply because they are a police officer or because they are criminals. Whatever the cost, the law must take its course.”

Asked why the Lagos police officer was in Adamawa State, Nguroje replied: “We will investigate. You can no longer ask questions of someone who has been attacked and killed. What we are doing now is that the command has taken over the investigations.

“We have to officially inform them (in Lagos) to inform us why he was in Adamawa. Was he on occasional leave, annual leave, on special missions or something? But right now I can't determine what brought him here. But, in fact, his death has been confirmed and the command is investigating the circumstances that led to his death.”
