Police personnel attached to the Suleja Area Command in Niger State have arrested two suspects for allegedly attempting to exchange the automated teller machine (ATM) card of a female victim at a commercial bank in the town.
The suspects were identified as Abar Wase and Godwin Deol, and a police patrol tracked their vehicle and intercepted it at Old NEPA Roundabout in Surekha Town.
The driver of the car, David Thelma, abandoned the vehicle and fled.
The state police public relations officer, Wasiu Abiodun, said in a statement that the victim raised the alarm after discovering that the suspects were trying to switch bank cards.
A police patrol chased the vehicle and intercepted it at the old NEPA roundabout in Surekha town.
Mr Abiodun said during interrogation, both suspects confessed that they traveled from Lokoja to Zuba, Abuja, where they met Thelma, who was said to have received the car from a ride-hailing driver in Abuja.
According to the police officer, the suspects, who are graduates of the Department of Educational Technology at Benue State University, claimed to have been carrying out such nefarious activities for the past five months.
They reportedly confessed to having withdrawn about N170,000 from the accounts of other victims in Nasarawa State, of which about N90,000 was withdrawn through the victim’s card in Lokoja, Abiodun said. added.
Items recovered from the suspects included a Toyota Corolla car with registration number YAB-267 CW, nine ATM cards, a POS machine and a flash drive.
The suspects are being further investigated by the Minna State Criminal Investigation Department, and efforts are on to apprehend Thelma, who is still at large.
