Police begin investigation after alleged cultist died in cell in Ogun

The Ogun state police command says it has launched an investigation after a suspected cultist died in a police cell.

A statement released by the command’s spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, says following an intelligence report that suspected cultists on the command’s wanted list were in the Atoyo area of ​​Sagamu, on Tuesday, November 18, 2023, the police swung into action in a secret operation where two suspected cultists identified as Oduyiga Seyi Samson “m” aged 39 and Gbenga Adejoke ‘m’, both notorious members of the Buccaneer and Eiye confraternity, were arrested.

Odutola said in interrogation that both Seyi and Gbenga made confessional statements about being members of the secret cult of the Buccaneer and Eiye confraternity. Seyi confessed that it was started in 2015.

Denying allegations that Seyi died after being brutally tortured by men of the police command, Odutola said the deceased was already accused of Cult-related activities and was taken to court on Thursday, November 23, 2023, where would be indicted before a special court. over the cultism case in Isabo Abeokuta but the honorable Court did not sit and he was brought back to Eleweran in Abeokuta on the same Thursday.

Seyi was to be brought back to court on the next available day that the Court will sit, which is Friday, November 24, 2023.

”However, on Friday, November 24, at around 05:00, Seyi became furious, shouting, biting his teeth and attacking other suspects in the cell until he became exhausted. Other suspects in the cell alerted the police officers on duty. He was taken to the police hospital and later to Ijaye Abeokuta General Hospital, together with other suspects he was bitten in the cell for medical treatment against infection. Other suspects were treated and discharged, but Seyi, while under medical care, later gave up the ghost.

She said that once the autopsy report on the deceased is out, the Police will provide more details.

The police spokesperson added that the Ogun police command maintains a strong commitment to upholding fundamental human rights laws, especially with regard to the treatment of suspects.

She emphasized that torture is strictly against her protocols and principles.
