Police arrest two vigilantes for allegedly torturing man to death in Abia

The Abia State Police Command has arrested two members of the Mbutu/Umuojima Vigilante in Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area of ​​the state for allegedly torturing a man to death.

The command's spokesperson, Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the arrest of the suspects, Onyebuchi Ukandu, a vigilante commander, and Emmanuel Onyebuenyi, in a statement on Friday, December 22, 2023.

According to PPRO, the victim, Alex Ukaegbu, in charge of a construction site in Osisioma, was detained by security guards for having an iron bar in his possession.

It was gathered that the suspects chained the victim and demanded payment of a sum of money before his release, but he died in their custody.

“At about 10am on December 1st, a complainant reported at the Osisioma Division that on November 30th at about 9am, he was informed over the phone that his elder brother, Alex Ukaegbu, who resides in the Tonimas area in Osisioma, who was also responsible for a project in the same area, was detained by members of the Mbutu/Umuojima Osisioma Vigilance Unit at around 5pm with some pieces of iron bars,” the PPRO said.

“The vigilante allegedly chained him in his office and was negotiating his release for the sum of N50,000. Unfortunately, Alex Ukaegbu died while in your custody.”

Following this report, police officers were sent to the scene for investigations and the lifeless body of Alex Ukaegbu was deposited at the Osisioma Funeral Home in Alanwemadu for preservation.

The case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
