Police and DSS neutralize three-man POS robbery gang in Enugu

Officers of the Nigeria Police Force and the Ministry of State Services on Sunday neutralized a three-man bandit gang in Enugu.

The gang specialized in robbing point-of-sale (POS) operators.

Enugu State Police Spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, said the gang members were neutralized in a gunfight, after which weapons and ammunition and a usable tricycle were recovered.

He said two locally made handguns, six rounds of 0.9mm ammunition and NOK 500,000 in cash were also recovered.

“Other exhibits recovered were rolls of POS transaction printing paper, various mobile phones, wallets, bags and items believed to be amulets,” he added.

Ndukwe also said the hoodlums had earlier robbed various POS operators and their customers at gunpoint in different parts of Enugu.

“At about 1pm, the hoodlums attacked POS operators at different locations in Enugu metropolis and snatched away the recovered exhibits.

“When the thugs spotted the security guard, they began to monitor him and opened fire on him.

“Security forces returned fire with superior firepower, neutralizing the three individuals and recovering exhibits in the process,” a police spokesperson said.

He added that many of the victims later identified their assailants and some of the recovered exhibits.

Ndukwe also said that “investigations are underway with a view to potentially locating other members of the criminal organization.”
