Pakistan army neutralizes 8 Islamic militants as hostilities escalate

Pakistan’s military says eight Islamic militants have been killed in a gunfight in the country’s dangerous northwest border region.

This comes amid a rise in bloodshed, which the Islamabad government blames on militants operating from bases in Afghanistan.

The gunfight took place in South Waziristan district. The area is a hilly region near the Afghan border that has long served as a stronghold for al-Qaeda-affiliated Islamic extremists.

A military statement on Monday regarding the overnight incident said “weapons and ammunition were recovered from the militants’ hideout.”

Deadly clashes between Pakistan’s military and militants have escalated in recent weeks, with repeated attacks on security personnel.

Pakistan has accused the Afghan Taliban leadership of being too soft on militants who are said to be hiding in Afghanistan and carrying out attacks across the border. Kabul disputes the charges.

Pakistan has expelled hundreds of thousands of unregistered Afghan refugees following rising tensions between the two countries.
