One person killed in collision between Okada rider and police officer in Lagos

Chaos broke out around Santos Street in Abule-Egba, Lagos State on Tuesday, as riders clashed with police officers enforcing the ban on motorcycles in the state.

The Lagos State Police Command, in a post on its official 'X' handle, said the officers were attacked by motorcyclists, popularly known as Okada riders, while trying to prevent enforcement of the ban.

The post said officers legitimately used tear gas to disperse the crowd and protect lives.

The post said, “A passenger on a tricycle saw tear gas being used in front of him, panicked, and jumped off the tricycle.

“Sadly, an oncoming Leyland tipper truck (registration number AAB 376 CB) drove recklessly and hit her.

“The driver of the dump truck abandoned the scene until the vehicle was recovered. The families of the deceased have also been contacted. Meanwhile, a full-scale investigation into the incident has been launched.”
