Ohanaeze warns of illegal constitutional amendments

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, on Tuesday warned against illegal constitutional amendments, stressing that those responsible will ultimately be shamed.

Mr. Ohanaeze warned that such illegal amendments were only aimed at preventing the emergence of a president from Rivers State in January 2025.

The organization stressed that this was a measure to extend the tenure of some deviant elements.

Okechukwu Isiguzoro, secretary-general of the Ohanaeze faction, said in a statement that he would resist any move to amend the organization’s constitution.

He called on the University of Igbo Bishops, global Igbo leaders, non-state actors, Ndigbo and Igbo elders to join forces to stop such a move.

Mr Isiguzoro said: “The process of initiating these illegal amendments to the constitution of Ohanaeze Ndigbo is in direct violation of Article 11(a) of the constitution which provides for presidential rotation among the seven Igbo speaking states. ” he said. Officially, Rivers State is the legal term for her to fill the role by January 11, 2025, with six other states already in the role.

“These unconstitutional amendments and proponents of the coup against Rivers State are also contradicting Articles 29 and 30 of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Constitution.

“Ndigbo has warned the perpetrators that their efforts to illegally amend the constitution will be strongly resisted. These unfortunate acts will ultimately end in futility and disgrace.

“The Igbo people are eager to witness the historic event of the election of a president from Rivers State since the end of the war in 1970.

“Any attempt to thwart this will only exacerbate the ongoing Igbo identity crisis and impede the process of reorientation and rediscovery of the Igbo people of Rivers State.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo stresses that no conspiracy theory or constitutional amendment can thwart the collective will of the Igbo people. To stop these desperate perpetrators from achieving their objectives, the Governor of the South East, the Igbo Bishop The association, global Igbo leaders, non-state actors, Ndigbo diaspora and Igbo elders must join together to stop their actions.

“The Ohanaeze Council of Elders, led by Prince Richard Ozob, has confirmed that the Rivers State presidential candidate will begin consultations across the seven Igbo-speaking states and launch a visible campaign ahead of the 2025 elections. Already approved.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo remains committed to upholding the principles of fairness, justice and constitutional observance.”
