The dismembered body of missing 12-year-old boy John Soyinka was discovered on Monday in the bushes of Kotogbo community in Asero Estate, Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital.
According to the Ogun State Police Command, the deceased’s eyes were gouged out and his wrists were severed.
Soyinka was declared missing a week ago and a report was made to Obantoko Police Station in Abeokuta.
Police Public Relations Officer of Osun Command, Mr. Omolola Odutola, confirmed the discovery of the body to reporters in Abeokuta on Wednesday.
Mr Odutola said the gruesome killing of Mr Soyinka turned the case into a murder case.
She said the body had been released to the family for burial, adding that an investigation was underway to unravel the perpetrators of the crime.
A resident of the area told reporters on condition of anonymity that the boy went missing after going to meet a customer who had made a transaction at a point-of-sale shop where the deceased was helping.
“I know the boy very well. He was about 12 years old and lived with his mother, but I believe her mother is no longer with her husband.
“His mother does simple jobs like helping people clean.
What we heard is that last Thursday, he wanted to check on a customer who had made a POS transaction. There was probably something to be worked out regarding the deal, but the boy never returned.
“As the boy and his mother lived in Olasunkanmi community, the Community Development Association reported the matter to the Obantoko Police Station Officer.
“The DPO alerted the police in Adigbe and Lafenwa, but it was the dead body of the boy that was seen on Monday in Kotogbo community, just next to Olasunkanmi.
“The two communities are located within the Asero Estate in Abeokuta. The boy’s eyes were removed and his wrist was also severed, leading to suspicions of ritual killing,” he said.
