The Abia NUJ Council, in a 12-point communiqué released at its monthly council meeting held at the NUJ Press Center in Umuahia, expressed concern over the rate of extortion at military checkpoints on various roads in the state. did.

The NUJ communiqué said commuters were being removed from their cars while passing through military checkpoints and forced to travel long distances.

The communiqué, signed by Comrade Victor Ndukwe (Chairman) and Comrade Adeze Ralph Igbokwe (Secretary), said that sandbags and other miscellaneous items have been found at roadblocks left unattended by security agencies across the state and in Ehimiri Housing Estate in Umuahia for a long time. requested that the items be removed immediately. While acknowledging the efforts of the Abia State Government and security agencies in the fight against insecurity, the NUJ expressed concern over the increasing incidents of robbery and banditry, particularly within Umuahia metropolis, and urged security agencies to address this issue ahead of Christmas. Lamenting the country’s rising inflation and the resulting high cost of living, the journalists called on the federal government to immediately stop the rapid rise in commodity prices and to pump large sums of money into the economy from the abolition of fuel subsidies.
