NLC demands new minimum wage commensurate with cost of living
The Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) has said the start of negotiations on a new national minimum wage in 2024 should reflect the country’s current cost of living.
NLC Chairman Joe Ajayero said this on Tuesday during the 19th NLC 2023 Harmattan School being organized by Congress.
The theme of the event is 'Building workforce skills for policy engagement'.
NLC National Schools include the Harmattan School, which trains and empowers members of affiliated unions through skills development.
Mr Ajayero, who was represented by NLC Vice-Chairman Benjamin Anthony, said governments at all levels must recognize that life and living conditions are extremely difficult.
“The removal of subsidies for petroleum products has further exacerbated the challenges faced by workers.
“This is causing severe pain, leading to higher inflation and increased inequality and poverty.
“A well-motivated and well-compensated workforce must be considered to have a positive impact on productivity and national development.”
But the ultimate goal is to establish a livable wage that covers living expenses while also allowing workers to save, he said.
According to Ahaero, recent attacks on workers and their leaders in Imo pose a serious threat to free association and collective bargaining.
